Imagine you are Vladimir Lenin and you are choosing your future successor for leadership of the Soviet Bolshevik (Communist) Party.
You have 6 potential candidates and you have compiled write-ups of them as stated in the textbook page 39 and 40. You can only choose 1 successor and you know that the future of your beloved Russia depends completely on making the right choice.
Given the history and social, economic and political situation in Russia at that time, write a note that will be read to the Central Executive Committee (See page 34) of the Communist Party upon your “cluck!” aka death, explaining the reasons for your choice.
Make the right choice……

My choice to choosing who as my successor would be Leon Trotsky. He is one of the oldest amongst the potential successors and I believe he would have seen more of the threats in Soviet Union together with his experiences like overthrowing the government. He has a talent of writing and oratory with his knowledge that makes him a good leader.Being able to write allows him to work with other people around the world easier. So I would choose Leon Trotsky as my successor.
If I'm Lenin, I will choose Nikolai Bukharin as my successor. He helps spread communism by publishing books about it and this shows that he had great intellectual ability, which is beneficial when he succeeds Lenin. He is the main supporter of Lenin's NEP, which shows that he agrees strongly that Russia should be a communist country, and this mindset is important to become a good leader of communism. Hence, I chose Nikolai Bukharin to be my successor if I'm Lenin.
I would choose Nikolai Bukharin . As he is intelligent so i think that he will be good in making plans for the future of Russia . And also , he had a sense of humour , i bet he will be popular among the people in Russia as people may fnd him friendly and support him . Therefore , with his intelligence and his characteristics , i think that he will have no problem in leading Soviet Bolshevik Party .
My choice for the successor of Lenin would be Josef Stalin. He was the editor of the Bolshevik Newspaper,Pravada, which promoted communist ideas throughout Russia. He made sure that the articles in the newspaper were supporting the revolution of overthrowing the government. He also helped Lenin escape from the government forces. After Lenin appointed him as Secretary-General, his opponents underestimated him and did not see him as a huge threat to their political position. Therefore, with Josef Stalin's wits and intelligence, I would appoint him as the successor of the Soviet Bolshevik Party.
Hi Jia Pao, I am intrigued by your suggestion of selecting Bukharin as your successor. I agree that Bukharin has great intellectual capacity but so do many of the other candidates. Kamenev was also a University graduate at Moscow University, the oldest and most established Russian University, no less. Does Bukharin have any other qualities that would make him a suitable successor and why would these qualities be so important in Russia at that time? Over to you..
If I were Lenin, the most potential successor to take over me once I pass on would be Leon Trotsky. Writing and oratorical skills are the two important skills which I believe are important to become a good leader. With such skills, he would be able to convince many, with his eloquence in words, into believing and supporting him, especially in such dire situations, when people become really desperate and would do anything to lead a normal and comfortable life. Returning to Russia after getting exiled by Europe definitely showed Trotsky's determination to fight for what he believed was right. Not only was he determined, he was also fearless and responsible. He carried out his tasks well and constantly led the Red Army to victory against the White Russian forces during the civil war. Being outspoken is good because he can generate ideas for improvements not only for himself, but others too. Therefore, Trotsky would be the best replacement of Lenin.
I would choose Nikolai Bukharin as my successor. As he was already an editor for Pravda ( a newspaper), he was too an university lecturer and author of books. These already heledp him spread about communism. But there's more to his advantage. He was already a main supporter of Lenin's NEP,had great intellectual ability, a famous sense of humor and liked to associate with the rough working class. This shows that people in Russia already supported/liked him. These actions can cause him to be like a ''leader'' in social and intellectual circles. Hence, I would choose Nikolai Bukharin to be my successor as he is intellectually sociable and he had already support the idea of communism .
